Also located at this spot were underground stations on the Berlin U-Bahn and S-Bahn , and today's new underground Regionalbahnhof , known as Bahnhof Potsdamer Platz , while the short-lived M-Bahn crossed the site of the former terminus.
The first train was hauled by a British -built locomotive, the work of Robert Stephenson at his Newcastle-upon-Tyne works in , and called Adler Eagle.
In the lines were extended west to Magdeburg , to link up with routes extending across the future German state. The whole area around the Berlin terminus became a major focus for urban growth after its opening.
Five major streets eventually converged here, most having started out as mere rough tracks through the Tiergarten park and adjoining fields.
The first Potsdamer Bahnhof lasted until , when it was superseded by a far grander structure in response to growing traffic, built by Julius Ludwig Quassowski — with five platforms, a trainshed roof that was m long and 36m wide, a booking hall with separate waiting rooms and facilities for four classes of ticket holders, and a separate entrance and reception area on the west side for visiting royalty.
By over 3 million people a year were using it, and it was holding its own against a larger rival down the road the Anhalter Bahnhof.
Still the facilities could not cope, and so in — two additional termini were built on either side of it for short-haul and suburban traffic: In , separate tracks for the suburban line along the Anhalter Bahn to Lichterfelde-Ost were built together with a number of new stations.
This line was the first Berlin suburban line to be electrified with Third Rail , opened on 2 July The lines terminating in the Potsdamer Bahnhof Wannsee station and the mainline terminus had to wait until 15 May to be electrified.
The Ringbahnhof ultimately handled many times as many passengers as the mainline terminus. Although smaller than the Anhalter Bahnhof, the Potsdamer Bahnhof was much the busier of the two.
By up to 83, people per day were using it, actually making it the busiest station in Berlin by a considerable distance.
Since most of these were specifically using the Ringbahnhof, it gave the impression that the entire terminus was simply a suburban or commuter station handling exclusively short haul services, yet the main line services, including those to Paris and other French destinations, were definitely still running.
The previous year , the terminus, together with the line from Potsdam, had reached its centenary, and the celebrations featured an operational replica of the "Adler" locomotive that had hauled the very first train years previously the original loco had been scrapped at Augsburg in The replica was the work of the DRG restoration workshop at Kaiserslautern in The fate of the Potsdamer Bahnhof was determined by World War II , and yet even if the war had not occurred, major changes would still have taken place.
Under the grand plan by Adolf Hitler — , to transform Berlin into the Welthauptstadt World Capital Germania , to be realised by Albert Speer —81 , the building would have ceased to be a railway terminus.
The new North-South Axis, the linchpin of the plan, would have severed its approach tracks, leaving the terminus stranded on the wrong side of it.
All trains arriving in Berlin would have run into either of two vast new stations located on the Ringbahn to the north and south of the centre respectively, to be known as Nordbahnhof North Station and Südbahnhof South Station , located at Wedding and Südkreuz.
The intended fate of the Potsdamer Bahnhof has not been documented. In the event things took a different course. Despite some rubble clearance and emergency repairs, damage to rail infrastructure further out was so great that the mainline terminus never saw another train, it and the Ringbahnhof finally closed on 3 August Shortly after war's end the Ringbahnhof got a reprieve of sorts, temporarily reopening on 6 August as terminus of the Wannseebahn trains, while the U-Bahn and S-Bahn received massive repairs millions of gallons of water had to be pumped out for starters.
The services were extended further in Potsdamer Bahnhof had a unique location in post-war Berlin. Located in the so-called lower Friedrichsvorstadt the Potsdamer Bahnhof became part of the new Kreuzberg borough in Since a change of borough boundaries in , the boroughs of Tiergarten and Kreuzberg lay on either side of Potsdamer Bahnhof, but the boundary of the borough of Mitte skirted around the site of Potsdamer Bahnhof, so it formed a long thin rectangle within Mitte extending as a salient south from the rest of Mitte towards, and just over, the Landwehr Canal.
As a terminus within East Berlin , but with its approach tracks coming through West Berlin , as with the Stettiner Bahnhof , the Deutsche Reichsbahn were not particularly anxious to restore many services to the station.
Another interruption of services was caused by the Uprising of in East Germany , no trains running between 17 June, the day of the uprising, and 9 July.
It is hard to imagine, but from through the Berlin Wall went right through Potsdamer Platz. During the 70ies on both West- and East Side almost all buildings near Potzdamer Platz were torn down.
With the death stripe on the East side and dead end streets on the West side the area soon became some sort of wasteland. And in the late 70ies, early 80ies plans to build an Autobahn parallel to the Berlin Wall were developed.
These plans were dropped only after the Fall of the Wall. The Potsdamer Platz basically consists of two — maybe three major areas. The Sony Center is a landmark.
But I guess that was originally intended by the architect. On the grounds of Beisheim Center two 5-star hotels can be found: During the International Berlin Film Festival Berlinale film stars like to stay in one of the two hotels since they are located so close to the main festival grounds.
Official Homepage of Beisheim Center: Once a year Marlene-Dietrich-Platz is covered in red and a giant disco ball is hanging from the ceiling of the theater at Marlene-Dietrich-Platz 1.
This is basically the headquarter of the International Berlin Film Festival Berlinale — this is where the big pictures are shown and where the stars walk the carpet.
You can either experience the architecture directly by roaming through the streets between the different buildings, or have look at the buildings from a distance.

The room exactly what we needed for a long weekend. Not too pocky not too roomy. I would recommend it again.
I requested the time for check-in at I didnt have an answer about that but when I was at the Hotel, at that hour, to do the check-in, I have to wait for 3 hours Nearly perfect considering the price.
Would just add a kettle to the rooms. Unfortunately the restaurant was not opened for dinner for the full duration of our stay which meant that we had to travel each evening to get dinner.
Great location and rooms were nice and clean. A shocking service that obliged me to pay for changing sheets that I ever changed.
Never clean the rooms even if they say yes. I sent clothes for laundry and I got them dirty and they said it was inhuman to ask another person I paid for it!
To clean up after me and that they do not use a washing machine only in water and that is the service they do.
At 26 euros I could wash all the laundry in this way. The perfect location in a beautiful hotel. Breakfast is poor, almost no options to choose from.
Better visit some other places for breakfast. No tea or coffee service in the room. Clean, easy acces, at the central city.
Breakfast cost too much and staff not very friendly. Lobby is really new, but rooms are like 20 years or more old inside - rooms are clean and comfortable, but furniture and room decor are like from "previous era".
Everything is in good technical condition, repaired, but looks old-fashioned. Great location - 1 min to nearest underground station, 5 min walk to the Potsdamen Platz, really close to all main tourist places.
Bathroom was not very clean. Good location, super quiet room, very friendly staff! The bed and the air conditioning in the room.
The price and the staff. Rooms were basic but very clean. Staff were helpful and breakfast was good. It was in a good area and very close to the u band and trams.
